This antique farmhouse in Riverside, CT had a JWH Kitchen renovation (in 2006)!

This beautiful JWH kitchen caught the eye of Connecticut Cottages & Gardens and was featured in this 2013 January Kitchen Trends Issue  , which was 7 years AFTER it was installed by the #theJWHTeam in 2006.  This furniture-grade stained cherry JWH Kitchen, with Calcutta countertops and stainless appliances, had a “trendy” look that appealed to the editorial team and became a feature in this kitchen issue for their design-savvy readers.  Given that this project had been successfully completed 7 years before these professional photos, this is was a testament to classic design, timeless materials, and excellent quality cabinetry.  Now fast forward to 2022 with ongoing posts about current design trends:  wood finishes, natural materials and mixed metals.  After 16 years this JWH Kitchen is still as functional and beautiful as the day it was installed.

The history behind this renovation:

Space planning was the key to it all.  This converted antique barn had all the spaces, but in all the wrong places.   Expanding the footprint was not the right solution since it didn’t actually solve the problem.  How do you create flow, function and great family living spaces?  This has been the specialty of JWH Design & Cabinetry since inception in 2000.

Inspired Design:

Turning the corner with the main part of the kitchen, and connecting to the family/living room, made all the difference.  The narrower portion of the room, previously the main kitchen space, was perfect better proportioned to serve as the “butler’s pantry.”  And to maximize function on a daily basis, this area converted easily to Mom’s drop spot and the kids’ snack area.

Innovative Function:

Hidden areas behind the backsplash became valuable concealed storage for everyday appliances.  Climbing behind the walls (and under the front stairs) revealed some space that could hold the countertop appliances when tucked away.  This idea was well ahead of its time in 2006 and are still functioning beautifully today.  Hint:  this blog has just been updated AGAIN in 2022!

Exquisite Cabinetry:

This family with 4 young children was thrilled beyond their expectations with the result of this renovation in 2006.  Moreover, they were impressed when their kitchen was photographed and published 7 years later by Cottages & Gardens for the 2013 Kitchen Trends issue.  And as this blog is updated in 2022, it’s a true testament to the quality of the design and the cabinetry.
